This Bukidnon Home Takes a Modern & Industrial Spin on the Farmhouse Style

City living has its perks, but there’s no denying the appeal of provincial life. If staying in a quieter, more suburban area is something that appeals to you, take inspiration from this Bukidnon home that is chock-full of heart and charm.
In an email interview with RealLiving.com.ph, the homeowner Jose Espiritu, who has been working as an OFW in Saudi Arabia for a decade, shares that it was back in 2018 when he purchased this plot of land in Bukidnon, where his parents live. Initially, he was in no hurry to build a home of his own because he had a place in Cagayan de Oro City, but during the pandemic, he ended up spending more time in Bukidnon with his family. At the time, he stayed primarily in a hotel so as not to endanger his parents’ health.
Eventually, however, Jose decided to start construction on his own home. The process began in August 2020 but paused in November due to issues with his contractor. He also had to return to Saudi Arabia in December 2021. At last, the construction picked back up in March 2022, at which point he began to work with his friend, contractor and architect Marianne Basa-Carpio, and interior decorator Toni Pepito.
For his home, Jose opted for a look that is a fusion of modern, industrial, and farmhouse. He writes, “Due to the existing shell of the house, the design was constrained. Nevertheless, we carried out renovations in a way that reflected my desired design style of a farmhouse, while incorporating elements of modern and industrial aesthetics.”
While working on this home, Jose and his team encountered a number of challenges. For instance, they had issues achieving optimal ventilation because the house was attached to the rear perimeter fence. There were also recurring leaks in the said wall, which meant multiple interventions had to be made to waterproof it.

Exterior
According to The Spruce, the exterior of a modern farmhouse typically combines elements like white paint, a simple front door made of stained wood, many windows, and a roof that is either black, gray, or metal. The exterior of Jose’s home ticks all those boxes and more, and also has a spacious porch.
Foyer
The foyer is the perfect place to receive guests or to simply get a feel of this home. It features elements of the modern, industrial, and farmhouse design styles, with wooden, barn-style doors, a trendy lighting piece, mostly black furniture, and several plants.
Living Area
Jose says that the most special feature of his home is its warm and inviting ambiance, adding, “Despite being located in the suburbs of Valencia City, the moment you step inside the house, you'll find it hard to believe you're still in the Philippines.” You definitely get that sense when you look at the living room, with its moody lighting and sophisticated but simple pieces. One remarkable piece here is the Loloi rug that was bought from Amber Interiors, which Jose says is one of the items he cherishes most.
Dining Area
Jose shares that the furniture and decor they used for this home came from a variety of sources; while some were purchased from local furniture shops, a considerable number were actually imported from the USA.
Kitchen
Though small, this kitchen exudes country chic! Take a look at the all-white scheme, neat backsplash, generous cabinet space, and the little touches of greenery all over the area.
Powder Room

Main Bedroom
This bedroom is arguably one of the parts of this home that most exudes the modern farmhouse style: It has shiplap walls, a palette of mostly neutral colors, a barn door, and an overall simple and fuss-free look.
Guest Bedroom
The second bedroom may be smaller, but it’s got no shortage of farmhouse-inspired charm. Some notable items in this room are the rattan-style pendant light, the rustic bureau, and the bright yellow pillow which gives the space a welcome splash of color. The room also has a large window that allows plenty of natural light to come in.
Main Bathroom
