6 Windows In Different Styles

From Pinoy to modern and everything in between, here are the different window types you should know about

To play on the popular quote: “Your eyes are the windows of your soul,” we can also say that “Windows are the eyes of your home.” Many homeowners pay too much attention to their house’s façade or interiors, but often neglect the look of the windows, thinking that no one would notice anyway.

Windows are an integral part of architecture, and should complement the overall style of the house, as well as provide security, privacy, and a visual connection to the outdoors. Here are some great window examples:

These types of windows are common to ships (hence: port-hole). This huge porthole window brings in natural light and surrounding views into this tiny Nano home. “The big round window is there to see the sky,” says its architect, Clara da Cruz Almeida. To see the rest of the house, click here.

Architect Joel Muñoz didn’t want to block off a great view of the swimming pool in this tropical-modern home, so he created corner windows for the dining room and bedroom—one of his oft-used architectural tricks. To see the rest of the house, click here.

A dormer window is a small window that protrudes out of a sloping, gabled roof. It is usually the high, small window of an attic room, and is suited to country-style homes, as seen in this charming Antipolo house. To see the rest of the house, click here.

French windows are casement windows that have cross-rails on them, and are seen mostly in country-style and traditional homes. Owner Diane Cuna updated the look of her French windows by painting them black. To see the rest of the house, click here.

Capiz shells from actual mollusks were used to make the translucent insets of the windowpanes of Spanish-colonial Filipino homes. Authentic capiz shell sliding windows were used in the restoration of this century-old bahay-na-bato in Taal. To see the rest of the house, click here.
