There are many limitations to designing small spaces. But thankfully, there are also many ways to create well-decorated compact residences that can truly feel like home. Such is the case with this 28sqm, one-bedroom unit in Mandaluyong City, owned by a doctor who specializes in interventional pulmonology.

According to interior designer Kathryn Patricia Mansibang from Interiors by Pat, the owner had two requirements for his home. First, he wanted a clean, spacious, and modern industrial look because he is not a fan of raw and rough finishes. Second, he wanted to use mostly multi-purpose pieces.

In an email interview with RealLiving.com.ph, IDr. Pat shared that the client requested for a home that resembled a man cave. “He was inspired by the interiors of the Team [Kramer's] house in Antipolo but he wants the design to be toned down. Not so much of the rough finishes because he's not a fan of it. And that's how I came up with Modern Industrial as a design style.”

To help achieve the first requirement, IDr. Pat – with the help of MM Design & Construction, which served as contractor for this project – tore down the existing drywall partition and replaced it with a perforated metal partition, which also allowed natural light to flow into the space. You’ll also notice that many of the pieces used here were custom-made.

To come up with a cozy, modern, industrial look, the walls were painted gray, and wood and metal elements were incorporated into the furniture and cabinets. IDr. Pat also opted to use a neutral color palette and warm lighting.

Storage was one of the owner’s main concerns with his space, especially because he has many items that he had received as presents. To solve this issue, IDr. Pat incorporated an item that functions as a bookshelf, shoe cabinet, and entertainment unit all at once. The sofa can be converted into a sofa bed, while the coffee table was customized so that it could function as both a center table and a surface for dining. There’s also an ottoman that can be used for extra seating and additional storage.

One common issue with small homes is designing them in a way that would make them not look cramped – and this was certainly a concern for the owner of this unit. To help address this, IDr. Pat added a custom-made bar table made of acacia wood and bar chairs made of metal and wood. This area can also be used as a working area, IDr. Pat noted.

Kitchen

The tiny kitchen has a pristine backsplash made of white subway tiles and under-cabinet lighting. IDr. Pat reused the existing countertop and added overhead cabinets since the original kitchen did not have any of those.

Bedroom

To add a bit of privacy to the sleeping area, the design team installed a screen partition. The custom-made bed frame is made of acacia wood and has hidden cabinets for storage. The headboard, which is made of wooden panels, also serves as a wall accent. Finally, the wardrobe has a bifold door and was custom-made with black tinted glass in metal framing.

Bathroom

Just like the rest of the space, the bathroom has black cabinets but also includes a medicine cabinet with built-in mirrors. The T&B also has an enclosed shower area furnished with a fixed showerhead.
