This Century-Old Sugarcane Train in Bacolod Is Now a McDo Dessert Station

Bacolod is known for their love of all things sweet, thanks in no small part to the sugarcane plantations abundant in the area. Farmers once relied on railways to help transport sugar from place to place; sadly many of these have since shut down, though artifacts referencing them remain in some parts of the city. In Bacolod's The Upper East district, one old train circles back to its sugary roots as it's now the site of a Dessert Center by fast-food chain McDonald's.

Hitting up McDonald's for their signature soft-serve's always a great way to sate the sweet tooth—and there's something oddly amusing about ordering up from the dessert-dedicated kiosks they've got outside most of their stores, dubbed their Dessert Centers. At the fast-food chain's recently opened branch in The Upper East, the said kiosk is cleverly incorporated into a refurbished century-old train belonging to the Bacolod-Murcia Milling Company, one of the city's OG institutions where The Upper East is now located. The trains are located in a 2,200-square meter open park which also functions as an al-fresco dining area for the recently opened McDonald's branch in The Upper East. As the store opened in time for the Masskara Festival, it also features a Masskara wall—as well as dual drive-thru lanes, e-charging stations, bike-and-dine racks, a McCafé booth, tulip lamps, and more.
