More and more people are discovering the joys of simple provincial life and the practicality of tiny home living. OFWs Erick Salamat and his wife Anna Monica Adapon-Salamat, for instance, built their forever home on what used to be a rice field in San Miguel, Bulacan.

"Pinatabunan then hanggang sa cinonstruct yung bahay," Erick tells Summit Media's OG team. "Ang total lot area niya pati sa paligid ng bakod is around 500 square meters."

The couple made the decision after a challenging time in their marriage, after Anna Monica suffered a miscarriage. When they saw someone post about setting up their retirement home, they started planning their home to help divert their attention.

A well-thought-out bahay kubo

Taking inspiration from the property's serene surroundings, Erick and Anna Monica incorporated a nature theme in their 36-square meter home to evoke a modern bahay kubo feel, with an amakan (also known as sawali) design for the exterior. To help save on electricity, they installed solar lights as well as a shallow well pump to collect groundwater. Perched outside the house is also a small bahay kubo with a living room, sink, and double-deck room for guests staying over.

Inside, there is sufficient space for a four-seater dining table, a kitchen, a living room, restroom, and two bedrooms. To continue the nature-inspired theme within the home, the couple used green tiles, curtains, and pillows. Adding interest to the interiors are pendant lamps that she and Erick specifically sourced in Dubai.

The Salamats' living room comfortably seats four, while the guest room can accommodate three people, as it contains a double decker bed with a twin bed on top and a single bed on the bottom.

Outside, the property offers breathtaking views of the Sierra Madre mountain range as well as Mt Arayat. Probably why Erick and Anna Monica built a porch with a hammock and an outdoor pool, which serves as a great area for entertaining guests and keeping cool during hot summer days. The couple considers it their favorite part of their home because of the relaxing vista.

"Especially now na nagwo-work from home pa 'ko, kahit medyo mainit sa tanghali, dito ako nagste-stay," Anna Monica says. "Kasi 'pag ma-stress ka sa trabaho, tingin ka lang sa view, parang mase-set ulit yung mood mo na mag-work."

Enjoying the simple life

All in all, Erick and Anna Monica spent approximately P1 million for the construction of their farmhouse. With a baby on the way, they're excited to raise their family away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
