Are you dying to revamp your small home but don’t know how to do it without making it look more cramped? Don’t fret—there are plenty of ways to create an illusion of visual space even in a room that does not have much square footage. With the help of smart planning and the right pieces, you can create a stylish, open, and airy space.

Add mirrors

When it comes to adding an illusion of more space to a small home, there’s nothing quite like the wonders that a mirror can achieve. These make any space look not just bigger but also lighter and more open. A tip: Use a large mirror, because the bigger your mirror is, the bigger your space will look.

Invest in “ghost” furniture

Furniture pieces made of Lucite, also known as “ghost” furniture, are another favorite for small spaces, as they can give the illusion of more space. “Clear pieces can help your space look less visually cluttered,” shares interior designer Vera Villarosa-Orila. “A couple of ghost chairs or a transparent coffee table can trick the eye into thinking that there is actually more free space in the [home].”

Let there be light

Another foolproof way to make any space look and feel more open is by allowing a lot of light to bathe it. Large windows can help a great deal in achieving this, but if your home does not have a lot of windows, the right lighting can help make your place look a lot bigger than it actually is.

Use a sectional sofa

There’s a widespread misconception that large furniture pieces should not be used in small rooms, but actually, when used wisely, these can help elevate the look of a tiny space. A sectional couch can both help define the space and anchor the design of the room, while simultaneously providing plenty of seating.

Let your couch face the window

If you’re having doubts about using a sectional sofa, you can always go for a smaller couch instead. But remember to situate it in such a way that it faces a window, which can reduce the feeling of claustrophobia and make your space look more open.

Opt for low furniture

Larger, bulkier furniture pieces can make a small room feel more cramped, so go for pieces which are closer to the ground. This can help your ceiling appear higher.

Elevate your curtain rods

Installing curtain rods closer to the ceiling, instead of directly above the windows, can make the ceiling look a lot higher. Make sure to use flowy curtains to emphasize that effect.

Be smart about storage

One of the challenges of living in small spaces is that storage can be difficult, but don’t let this scare you. Try using shelves, or incorporating storage into your furniture pieces. As interior designer Lisa Salvador says, “Work out a plan where storage is incorporated from the start to eliminate future headaches of where to place things. If space is tight, look up and look down—storage can be above your desk and below your bed.”
