Tropical Meets Contemporary In this 60sqm Condo Unit

Clean lines and island-inspired details complete this two-bedroom family home

Those who are building and completing their family homes may have one thing in common—they want a space that’s not only comfortable and welcoming, but a house that’s safe and secure for their little ones, too. The owners of this condo home in Muntinlupa wanted something similar—they hoped for a compact home that would remind them of a relaxing hotel suite.

With the help of architects Patrick Espiritu and Spencer Sy, they were able to achieve just that. Taking inspiration from the property’s tropical-inspired architecture, the duo chose materials like wood panels, faux abaca wallpaper, and accent lighting with woven details. Given the limited area to work with, the owners and designers were more than pleased with the result—they got a warm and inviting home with a classic and Pinoy appeal.

Living and Dining Areas

The common areas greet visitors upon entrance to the unit. With the living and dining areas taking up most of the space, the bathroom and the kitchen are on the right side. A gray area rug separates the living area from the dining space.

Living Area

Neutrals dominate the living area to allow the wood panels to stand out. The storage center/TV console is a smart small space trick—one would think that it simply houses the entertainment system, but the cabinet doors are actually concealed by the wall panelling. The side ledge is also a design marvel—it's a cabinet that can be used to store sheets, shoes, and other belongings.

Pops of orange seen in the pillows and decor add a punch of color while maintaining the zesty tropical look.

Dining Area

A balance of different elements make this dining area special. The vertical cove lighting not only helps define this part of the home, it also adds a bit of drama to the space by way of the warm light. Meanwhile, the mirror in the middle makes the area look bigger than it really is.

Complementing the light walls in the unit is the dining table with a dark finish from CW Home Depot. We especially loved the bench as seating piece—it's the perfect choice for the little ones. Guests would also notice the pair of diamond-shaped rattan pendant lights by Ilse Crawford for IKEA that finishes off the tropical look.

Master Bedroom

The floor area may have been limited but this didn't stop the designers from creating a bedroom that's relaxing and functional. One side of the room features a full-height wardrobe with wood panels and a concealed door for a sleek and clutter-free look.

Cove lighting was added behind the bed to accentuate the headboard and to serve as nightlight.

Kiddie Bedroom

How can three kids sleep comfortably in a small bedroom? The designers built a bunk bed on one side then raised the bed on the left to create enough space for a mini wardrobe. Working with white for the bed and cabinet opens up the space while the wooden flooring adds warmth.

Kiddie Bedroom

To add character to the bedroom as well as to personalize each child's corner, artsy details like this wall art were added. The work of art depends on each son's favorites like Star Wars and race cars.

Kiddie Bedroom

What's a kids' room without the toys? To keep favorites organized, a shelf was added at the foot of the top bunk.

Kiddie Bedroom

Often referred to as a "personal refrigerator" by the kids, the wardrobe is a customized piece by the designers. It's cladded in high-gloss acrylic so the kids and the parents can leave notes, tasks, and other reminders on the door. To maximize every inch of storage space, it also has pull-out compartments for different types of clothing and essentials.
