This Condo Home Proves You Can Use Dark Colors in a Small Space
Design consultant Euzon John Catayong delivers a unit with a bold aesthetic and elegant appeal
Deciding on a color palette is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when revamping the home. Light and neutral colors help create a welcoming vibe while darker hues give off an edgy feel. When it comes to choosing colors for a small space, many would rather go the neutral route then use dark shades as accents. In this 43sqm unit though, design consultant Euzon John Catayong decided to use mostly dark shades, complementing it with glam décor pieces and finishes.
“The dark color palette supports the function of the areas in the unit while emphasizing the works of art and accessories added to the space. It also helps highlight the drop ceiling while establishing a cozy and relaxing atmosphere,” Euzon explains.

Entrance
A fluted wall panel defines the unit’s entrance where a framed painting is on display. Even the colors of the artwork complement the unit’s palette.
Unit Overview
The unit follows an open layout, with the living and dining areas on the left, and the kitchen on the right. From this angle, you can admire the varying wall treatments in the space as well as the drop ceiling in the living area. To separate the kitchen from the rest of the unit, different floor tiles were installed.
Dining Area
The compact dining area features a captivating lighting piece and a gray marble backdrop that mirrors the one in the living area. Complementing the sleek dining table are the matching chairs and a cushioned bench completed with a gray velvet fabric.

Living Area
The fluted wall defines the living area which is completed with neutral-colored furniture pieces and furnishings in yellow. If you look closely, the colors of the furnishings match the colors seen on the carpet to achieve a cohesive look.
Euzon made sure to choose décor pieces that will still stand out given the bold color palette. In the living area, he chose to bring in mismatched tables that double as décor.

Sleek best describes the entertainment wall. Since the gray marble backdrop is already captivating on its own, there are minimal décor items on display, plus, there are enough storage nooks to keep clutter at bay.
Kitchen
According to the design consultant, the owners were very particular with how the kitchen would look like. “They requested to knock down the wall separating the kitchen to make it open and airy,” Euzon recalls. In addition to the black graphicoat backsplash, what makes the cooking area modern and elegant is the real stone marble countertop.
To complement these materials, the modular cabinets also highlight a glossy finish.
Bedroom
“Since it’s quite a small space, we maximized it by integrating the cabinets to the walls and installing mirrors to make it look spacious,” says Euzon. For the headboard, the design consultant decided to have a tall velvet gray headboard that reaches up to the ceiling to make it a focal point.

At the foot of the bed are more storage compartments and a floating desk that can also function as a vanity nook. “The lighting pieces in the bedroom give off warm white light to create a dramatic effect in the sleeping area as well,” adds the design consultant.
Bathroom
“For the continuity of the design seen in the living area, we used wood ceramic tiles in contrast with the grey tiles in the bathroom. The big round mirror aesthetically matches the plain gray wall, too,” Euzon explains. Though not seen in photo, the bathroom also has a glass enclosure defining the shower area.
