Small Space Hacks Make this 23sqm Studio Unit Look Bigger
Tinybean Interior came up with a flawless design that allows the owner to work, sleep, and entertain friends in a compact space
Not all small spaces are designed the same. While it’s a given to see tried-and-tested hacks that make a compact home look bigger, each one has its own appeal that matches the owner’s personality. Design professionals also make sure every inch of space meets the user’s needs.
In this 23sqm studio unit in Quezon City, Tinybean Interior achieved a functional modern interior with monochrome colors mixed with lighter wood finishes as accent for a cohesive look. Given the size of the unit, the designer focused on making it look more spacious while allotting areas for work, sleep, cooking, and even exercising.

“The main challenge was designing all the built-in cabinets and storage units without making the space feel too boxy while still providing ample storage space sufficient for the client’s needs,” the designer explains.

View from Entrance
Opting for a color palette dominated by white and neutrals opens up the unit. According to the designer, natural light bounces off the walls that add to its airy feel. If you look down, you’ll notice the tiles, too. “We opted for bigger cut tiles with a light gray cement-like look to lessen the appearance of grout and make the space appear larger than it is,” explains the designer.
Open Storage Unit
Instead of adding a boxy cabinet, Tinybean Interior opted for an open storage nook. In this space, the client can keep his clothes, shoes, linens, and other belongings. Light gray curtains help conceal the visual clutter as well. The designer chose curtains to soften up the overall aesthetic.
Kitchen
One of the first things you’ll notice in the kitchen is how sleek and streamlined it is. The owner has tons of storage space, plus, the countertop is spacious enough to prep meals. To keep within the look, the kitchen cabinets feature a matte white laminate finish and don’t have handles. Even the drawers don’t have knobs or pulls.

“The kitchen backsplash used was graphicote glass with a light gray tint. It adds to the clean aesthetic of the all-white kitchen cabinets and white quartz countertop. It also reflects the daylight coming through the windows,” adds the designer.
Dining Area
Since the client requested for a dining set that can be tucked away when not in use, the designer chose stackable stools from IKEA then paired it with a small table customized with wheels. The table can also be used when prepping meals.
Workspace
Despite the size of the unit, the designer was able to incorporate a spacious workspace complete with a desk, a comfy chair, and task lighting. According to the designer, the chair gives a good contrast to the white computer desk. She’s also able to make space for a Tolomeo mini Parete wall lamp from Artemide as extra lighting.
Sleeping Area
The bed makes a special appearance when it’s time to call it a day or watch some TV. Inspired by Never Too Small videos on Youtube, the owner specifically requested for a Murphy Bed. Tinybean Interior asked Manila Maker to create a customized bed made using quality hardwood and special hardware.

The designer also made sure to use white Venetian wood blinds so the owner can adjust the amount of sunlight entering the unit.
When the bed is up, it frees up space allowing the owner to entertain friends and exercise. Meanwhile, when it is down, the wall area painted dark gray is revealed which is in contrast to the all-white kitchen.
Niches are also seen all over the unit to allow the owner to keep his collections, books, and other essentials organized.
