Those who are looking for a place to rent have a checklist to accomplish before finally settling on a property. Aside from making sure it’s accessible to one’s workplace and other establishments, it’s essential to have a flexible space that’ll make it easier for the renter to personalize the unit and make it his or her own. The same principle guided interior designer and Real Living associate style editor Tala Singson in designing this 36sqm studio unit.

Since the owners wanted to have a minimalist style that would appeal to future tenants, Tala worked with natural finishes, a neutral color scheme, and an open layout to keep the unit airy and looking spacious. In addition to bringing in new pieces, the designer also incorporated some of the quirky must-haves left by the previous homeowner into the final look. These touches not only added a laid-back feel to the space, it also made it easier for Tala to keep within the project’s budget. After the renovation period, the unit is now ready for viewing—with natural light coming in from the windows, the inviting seating pieces, and its charming nooks—it has become an envy-worth space that anyone would love to call home.

The one-wall kitchen welcomes guests into the unit. It follows the home's color scheme—with the gray cabinets and white backsplash. To liven up to the nook, Tala added plants and fruits on display.

To add an organic feel to the unit, the designer showcased a lot of natural finishes as seen in the furnishings. In the kitchen, the custom pine kitchen trolley by Dekko serves as focal point. It breaks the monotony of neutral colors while adding warmth to the cooking area.

Dining Area

The dining set in white and natural wood creates a casual-meets-country vibe in the unit. If the tenant decides to revamp the overall look of the space, he or she can retain the dining set and simply add extra seating pieces.

Dining Area

Colorful prints and postcards liven up the wall. To do something similar in your space, choose the photos you like and stick these to the wall using plain masking tape or washi tapes.

Living Area

Bathed in natural light, the living area will remind you of the beach. The branch shaped like a wishbone and the beach chair serving as extra seating piece were from previous homeowner. These quirky touches add personality to the space and keep it welcoming.

Tala opted for a jute rug to add to the organic feel of the home. It works well with the media console and coffee table. According to the designer, the coffee table used to have a grayish white tabletop. The surface was sanded to reveal a lovely wood tone that matches the overall look of the unit.

Sleeping Area

Fresh cotton sheets make the bed inviting and perfect for lazy weekend afternoons. The chosen curtains not only add depth to the space, it also functions as a headboard that anchors the sleeping space. Meanwhile, the future tenant also has access to a spectacular view of the city with the unit's generous windows.

To make the space more interesting, Tala opted for patterned pillows and pieces in a subtle color to match the rest of the space. Notice the sofa? It's wrapped in a flat sheet to match the unit's palette and add to the relaxed vibe.

Living Area

Aside from the coffee table, the three-tier media console was also modified to keep within the unit's theme. It was repainted then decorated with books, decor, and plants to complete the look.

While each area is distinct from each other, using the same finishes helped tie the look together. The open layout also makes it possible for the future tenant and his guests to interact while keeping the setting comfy and intimate.

Decor Detail

Serving as extra storage in the unit are round woven baskets with lids. Paired with prints and a sleek floor lamp, these make up a pretty vignette on one side of the bed.
