Q: We're thinking of having a daybed custom-made. I would like to know the standard size of a daybed and material, specifically the type of wood that's most appropriate for this kind of furniture. Please feel free to give me tips. Thanks.—Elsa Guballa

A: The versatility of the daybed makes it perfect for modern homes. Usually, a daybed requires a twin size mattress. Just like any piece of furniture, a daybed needs to have a solid, sturdy frame. Daybeds may have solid wood frames, metal frames, or a combination of the two.

If you prefer the look of a purely wooden daybed, you can use tanguile and some plywood. Use wood that has nice grain if you want to stain the piece. Ask help from the furniture maker in deciding what type of frame to use as it may depend on your preferred design.
