10 Easy Ways To Create A Chic And Pretty Bathroom

We've got loads of ideas from this lovely Cavite house. Some of this homeowner's tricks don't cost much, too!

Homeowner Donna Pita surely knows how to create a stylish and on-trend look on a budget (she’s a fashion stylist by profession), and she does it in a refined, very sophisticated way, you won’t even notice the budget pieces.

And in case you missed the lovely bathrooms in her gorgeous family home in Cavite, we’ll show you all three loos here, with complete details on how to cop the lovely looks at home.

Use a wooden door.

Contrary to the belief that you should install waterproof (or glass) doors in bathrooms, you can use wooden doors as long as it is located far from the main wet areas like shower stalls. Donna used a solid wood sliding door in her powder room. Wood can add warmth and texture to a bath.

Keep the background sleek, but add décor.

Simple, modern bathroom fixtures and subway tiles provide a clean and timeless backdrop that you can play up with vintage finds and décor. The powder room gets a subtle accent from the black-and-white diamond pattern floor tiles from CW Home Depot. You can find a similar ceramic stool like this at The Landmark or at Uniwide.

Instead of chrome, try copper-finish fixtures.

To offset the all-white bathroom, Donna went for copper-finish bathroom fittings, which have a vintage look that’s softer-looking than the usual stainless steel or chrome fittings.

You can find vintage-style, copper-finish shower and bath fittings like these at the shops at CW Home Depot Ortigas.

Accent with metallics.

These metallic pewter-finish and copper frames and sunbursts are just budget P88 finds from Daiso! When set against an all-white bathroom, these look classic and elegant.

Ceramic seats are your friends.

You can’t go wrong with a ceramic stool in the bathroom (as seen here in Donna’s master toilet and bath). A stool can be spot to stack your magazines, or somewhere to sit on while drying yourself up. You can find affordable ceramic stools (and other ceramic decorative treasures) at Uniwide Warehouse Club, or at the open-air stores along San Francisco St., Mandaluyong City.

A clawfoot tub is a timeless classic.

Yes, even in modern homes! “Kailangan medyo vintage-style ang fixtures ng banyo,” enthuses Donna, who invested in a clawfoot tub for her modern bathroom, to add a luxurious, feminine touch. Donna got hers (along with the telephone-style shower set) from Homestore. Just make sure that your doors are big enough to accommodate the width of the bathtub when they deliver it.

Splurge on your finishing materials.

While scrimping on vintage décor and furniture, Donna made sure to invest in her bathroom’s finishes, such as this fine marble countertop and backsplash in the master toilet and bath—the marble will last you a lifetime. She bought the marble in one big slab, and asked a subcontractor to cut it on site so she could keep all the excess pieces. You can get a similar retro-style faucet like this at Vintage Hardware PH.

Don’t forget the toiletry storage.

Storage is always an afterthought in bathrooms, but you should not forget this detail. A simple shelving system or niche is enough to corral your toiletries, towels, and toilet paper, and keep them from getting wet. This is a Lerberg metal shelving unit that you can buy locally at Mobler.

A touch of green softens the look.

Place a small, live, potted or water plant to your bath to add a bit of green. A bonus: most household plants thrive in the moistness of a bathroom, like the common pothos or devil’s ivy plant.

You can get Spanish-style tiles for a song.

Spanish-style, patterned encaustic tiles are often costly (P100 to P200 and up per piece), but you can get the same look for less with these beautiful gray patterned tiles from Mariwasa, which cost less than P50 each. She paired these printed tiles with clean, white walls and medium-gray subway tiles (see above).
