Depending on the style and feel that we want to achieve, we all have our own preferences when it comes to furniture and decor. One common question that we need to answer is: will this piece fit inside my space? Size should be prioritized since huge pieces of furniture may not be ideal for your home while small picks may not help you maximize the available floor area.

Interior designer Kimi Manuel shares a couple of tips that one must remember when looking for furniture to ensure a "perfect fit."

You should take into consideration the number of people at home

Are you living alone? Do you live with four siblings? Make sure that your chosen furniture can accommodate your family and guests. You don't want them to sit on the floor so it's best to pick pieces that can make everyone feel relaxed and comfortable.

Measure the dining table

"For a single person, a dining table setting is sized at 60cm by 35cm. For a square table, 90cm x 90cm is ideal to seat four people and a 180cm x 80cm rectangular table is for six people," shares Kimi.

Seating furniture vary in size depending on style and material

There are multiple options for those who want to purchase sofas and benches. In general, an upholstered armchair is about 85cm x 85 cm, a two-seater at 160cm length and a three-seater is about 220cm in length. Before making a purchase, measure the space where you intend to place the furniture. Bring these measurements and your tape measure when you go to the store so you can triple check if it can fit in your space.

Put quality on top of your list

Aside from picking pieces that are fit for your family and your needs, you should also ensure the quality of the pieces that you have in mind. Pieces like the sofa and dining table are used daily so you need to go for sturdy materials. It’s best that you invest in high quality pieces that are worth splurging money on.
