DIY: Transform an Old Bed for Less Than P1000

Find out how entrepreneur and DIY enthusiast Beam Mariano updated her parents' forgotten piece

What do you do when you can't afford to buy brand-new furniture? According to homeowner Beam Mariano, you should simply use an old piece!

Beam shares that when she moved into her 30sqm apartment, she didn't want to buy a nice bed. Instead of spending P40,000 on one of the beds that she wanted, she just reinvented the "old and ugly" headboard she found in her parents' attic.

Although the piece was still in pretty good shape, Beam wanted to change the dark color of the frame and the tufted details. She also wanted to hide the old-fashioned phoenix-and-dragon carving.

"Before painting, I sanded down the varnish-covered surface with sandpaper. I also covered the bed frame with three coats of white paint," explains Beam.

RL Tip: Always wait for the paint to dry before applying another coat!

After letting the third and final coat of paint dry overnight, Beam spray-painted the tufted detail using Bosny Baltic White.

RL Tip: Cover the wooden frame, walls, and nearby furniture with newspaper. This will protect other surfaces from overspray.

Because Beam did not have to buy a new bed, she was able to invest in an orthopaedic bed. Since her headboard is pretty high, Beam chose a thick mattress. She covered the piece with high-quality bed sheets and mismatched pillows.
