TVs have always been the star in the living area for almost a century. Aside from being a staple in many homes, it is an appliance that has adapted well to the Internet age. From the bulky, tube boxes of the past, we now have access to slimmer, smarter, and energy-efficient options that allow us to enjoy our favorite shows and movies with ease. However, as technology gets better, prices inevitably go higher, too.

Keep in mind that you don't need to spend a lot just to be able to enjoy marathons. There are affordable options in the market today that offer the basics, plus a few modern features that promise a unique experience. The bonus? These picks have good product design that goes well with any interior style. Before you visit the nearest appliance store, here are features you need to look for to make your purchase count:

  • For a ballpark price of P15,000, you'll be able to buy a 32-inch TV that will fit in a small living area. A reliable rule of thumb you can follow when choosing the best size is the distance between you and the TV. Here's an easy formula: viewing distance (in inches) divided by three gives you the ideal screen size. If your sofa or seating piece is placed eight feet (equates to 96 inches) away from the TV, a 32-inch pick is ideal.
  • Check the resolution. By 2017 standards, it should be at least FHD (Full HD) or 1080p.
  • Choose a TV that can help you save on energy. A 32-inch to 40-inch LED TV should not consume more than 100W off the wall. Ask the store attendant about this just to be sure.
  • Other basics that are musts for this price range include: connectivity options like HDMI ports, USB ports, and cable input. You may also want to look into an optional wall mount support.

Ready to scout for your new TV? Be on the look out for these picks:

Sharp 40" LED TV Black LC40LE265M

The 40-inch Sharp Aquos LC40LE265M doesn't have all the bells and whistles of its more expensive counterparts, but what it has are the essentials you need in an LED TV for its price point of a little under P14,000. It has a large Full HD screen, it's power efficient, has two HDMI ports, and a single USB port. The Sharp Aquos LC40LE265M is also one of the few TVs that offer a fast response time of 6 ms—which means blurring is reduced on certain fast-moving scenes. Just keep in mind that it doesn't have a VESA wall mount support.

Avision 43" Digital LED HD TV Black 43K786D

Avision is a relatively new player in the market, but it hasn't stopped the brand from churning out positively reviewed products in the last few years. One of the brand's latest products, the 43-inch 43K786D, sports a near-frameless ultra slim design, and is equipped with a built-in ISDB-T receiver. It also comes with a free wall mount, but only for a limited time as of this writing.

Sony Bravia 32" LED TV KDL-32W607D

If you're looking for a slightly smarter option, consider Sony's KDL-32W607D, albeit with a few drawbacks. It has a smaller 32-inch, 1366 x 768p screen, and uses an LCD panel. But what it lacks in the display department, it makes up for connectivity options and other smart features. The KDL-32W607D is equipped with an ethernet port and a built-in Wi-Fi receiver. You can also connect your phone via screen mirroring using Miracast™ or mount it on the wall. This model costs P15,999, with discounts.

Skyworth 32" Digital Android Smart TV 32E2000D (12399)

Android is more popularly known as a mobile operating system, but it's also being used in smart home appliances in recent years, including TVs. Skyworth's Wi-Fi-enabled 32E2000D is powered by the popular OS, which is rare for a TV at this price point. And since it's running on a reliable operating system that most people are familiar with, it means the user interface is more intuitive compared to other smart TVs that use their own stock software. Its only caveat is its HD-only screen.

Toshiba 32″ LED TV 32S1700EE

Being one of the really affordable options on this list doesn't stop the Toshiba 32S1700EE from being a tempting pick. It has a nifty feature that's uncommon in most TVs, and it's what Toshiba calls its own PVR system or Personal Video Recording. PVR allows viewers to set up recordings of all their favorite shows so they can watch whatever they want, whenever they want to. PVR records straight to a flash drive or a hard disc drive (HDD), so it’s an ideal way of compiling a library of content, ready to be watched at the user’s leisure.

Xenon 32" Android TV with Built in ISDB-T Black LE-3228SD

Xenon's Wi-Fi-Ready Android TV comes with a free wireless keyboard for those who want a desktop computer-like experience. But unlike other Android TVs in its category, the Xenon LE-3228SD sports a Full HD 1080p screen. All these features ring in this TV at P13,599 (online price)

TCL LED32S4900 32" GoLive Internet Smart FHD LED TV

Although TCL's LED32S4900 isn't running on Android, it's using a comparatively reliable OS in Linux. It also has Opera Web Browser, Youtube, and Facebook GoLive pre-installed which means you can use the TV's online capabilities right out of the box. This TV also has a pair of fairly powerful integrated speakers rated at 8W each at the bottom.

Samsung 32" HD TV 32J4003

The Samsung 32J4003 may not be Wi-Fi capable, but it doesn't skimp on features. The screen's resolution may only be at 1366 x 768p but it's one of the best in its class—thanks to Samsung's Wide Color Enahncer Plus feature. It also has a screen capture technology that allows the user to take screenshots while watching. The perfect plus? It has a feature that protects the TV from damages caused by power surges, humidity, and lightning. This one retails at P15,099, sale price.
