4 Important Questions to Ask Before Buying Furniture

Assess your needs and make sure you take note of these important considerations

As much as possible, we want to furnish our space with the things we love. Are you planning to buy the sofa that you've been eyeing for months? Before going on a furniture shopping spree, make sure you answer these questions first. Doing so will help you save money and avoid impulse buying.

Do I really need this?

If you're thinking of replacing an old piece at home, do a double and triple check first. You may save on costs by reupholstering an old chair or repainting an old table. If you are on a tight budget, consider multipurpose pieces. For example, in lieu of a sofa, opt for a storage ottoman or a sturdy armchair. The ottoman can serve as storage, too.

Is there a cheaper alternative?

Do your research. Just because you saw a charming sofa in one store doesn't mean you've found the perfect piece for your space. Do estimates, compare quality and prices and go online. You may also consider visiting thrift shops to score secondhand finds or have some of the pieces that you already have upcycled.

Where will I place it?

If you will buy a new piece, where will you place it? Interior designer Jean Suzanne Sy suggests taking a photo of the furniture first then reviewing the photos at home. This will allow you to compate the pieces that you are eyeing with the ones that you already have as well as review your top five prospects. It is also important that you measure the space allotted for the new furniture just to make sure that whatever you'll buy, it will fit perfectly.

RL Tip: Use masking tape to simulate the size of the furniture in your space. Doing this allows you to check if the piece is too big or too small for your space.

How often am I going to use this?

Be realistic and see if you can maximize the piece. You don't want to purchase an item that will just sit in one corner of the house! If you live in a condo or a small space, it’s best to purchase furniture that can serve different purposes. Instead of buying an extra console table, you may set a dining table against a wall then add decorative elements on top. These decor pieces can moonlight as centerpiece.
