IKEA has yet to open its doors in the country, but it seems to have already been making a huge positive impact in communities.

Previously, the Swedish home design and improvement brand has partnered with Rags2Riches in order employ community artisans and help create sustainable income. With the Philippines battling COVID-19, IKEA has recently donated 25 shelters which will be built near hospitals with the help of the Office of Civil Defense. This was announced by the Office of the Vice President on its official Facebook account.

IKEA Shelters or “Better Shelters” are the company’s temporary housing solution for displaced families made in partnership with UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). Its modular design was so revolutionary that it won the 2016 Beazley Design of the Year, and it offered refugees a more dignified place to temporarily call home.

Two flat boxes can easily transport materials of a 17.5-square-meter shelter. It only takes four people four hours to assemble one with no need for tools. A shelter can safely house five people and lasts for up to three years.
