RL Makeovers: A P100,000 Living Room Transformation in an 86sqm Home

To celebrate the homeowners' 50th wedding anniversary, interior designer Kimi Manuel changed their living area

When Goldie Fuertes Miranda failed to win Real Living’s Ultimate Makeover last year, she gave up hope of winning a free makeover in time for her parents’ golden wedding anniversary. Imagine her surprise when she found out that she would also receive a free Real Living makeover!

Goldie explains that the 86sqm house was built 30 years ago but it has never been renovated or updated. In fact, their living room was already crowded with furniture, appliances, and other things that her family accumulated through the years. Since this is the space that would greet family and friends upon entering the home, interior designer Kimi Manuel focused on this area.

For this makeover, Kimi spent four days finding materials and accessories at Robinsons Department Store and Handyman. She also devoted six days on the renovation. Her efforts (as well as that of her entire team) are clearly reflected in the bright new look of the living room.

Move the furniture

To make the most of the small space, Kimi moved the sofa to another part of the living room. “Before, it was difficult for them to watch TV because the furniture pieces were far from each other. Now, even if they aren't watching TV, they can still gather together,” explains Kimi.

Update existing pieces

Kimi refurbished the old sofa with a fresh coat of white paint and brand new slipcovers.

The family also had a cabinet-type TV set which has been with them for 50 years. Goldie shares that it was the first TV in their neighborhoodthe family and neighbors watched the first man to land on the moon and Gloria Diaz win the Ms. Universe title on it. When it stopped working, the family covered it with green cloth and put small items on top. Kimi decided to remove the cloth and turn the piece into a retro console table.

Invest in new curtains

Since two of three windows in the living room were irregular in size, Kimi highlighted them with white and mango yellow curtains from Robinsons Department Store. She explains that the long curtains opened up the space and made it seem more symmetrical.

Create a media wall

Contractor Dado Zafico (mobile: 0927-659-3847) built an entertainment wall using white plywood. He also customized the white cabinet using more plywood. The ledge is from Handyman and the lamp and accessories are from Robinsons Department Store.

Use wall moldings

To add elegance to the living room, Kimi created an accent wall using white wall moldings from Matimco. Instead of putting up framed photos or artworks, you can also find wall moldings at Handyman.

Pick decorative touches

The stylish pillows, tabletop accessories, and yellow candles are from Robinsons Department Store. A gray shag rug makes the area seem warm and cozy.
