A Living and Dining Area Makeover for a Young Couple for P80,000

Interior designer Hannah Acab-Faustino transformed a plain space into a country-inspired sanctuary

Homeowners Reinier and Jennie Tatlonghari agree that, as far as houses go, their first place together was not that bad. It had good furniture pieces, decent paint on the walls, and no major structural defects. However, they felt that the home lacked character and personality.

To turn the house into a home for the young couple, interior designer Hannah Acab-Faustino gamely stepped in. After meeting with Reinier and Jennie and looking at their living, dining, and kitchen areas, Hannah decided on a country-inspired style.

Here are the 5 things that we can learn from the space that now has a warm, cozy, and comfortable feel:

If you would like to immediately improve your own home, you may want to replace your lighting fixtures. For this particular home, Hannah installed drop lighting in the living area, additional CFL lighting in the work corner, and suspended fluorescent lighting in the kitchen.

All of the lighting fixtures are from Handyman.

You can also update the look of your space by revamping your old furniture pieces. For example, Hannah reupholstered the sofa, chairs, and dining chairs with floral fabric from Townes, Inc.

To make room for a small home office, Hannah moved the dining table and reupholstered dining chairs to one side.

She also used a quirky orange capiz divider to separate the dining and kitchen areas. Orange tableware, decor, and accessories can be found in the different parts of the space.

If you look closely, you might notice that Hannah used dark varnish on the kitchen cabinets. She did this so that the cabinets would match the seats in the dining area.

We also loved the chalkboard paint on the cabinet doors! To make your own chalkboard paint, you can mix together one cup of paint and two tablespoons of non-sanded tile grout. Stir the mixture well to avoid lumps.
