Kate and Ryan Caseles had a living area that wore many hats. It was where the family stayed in to relax, sometimes get some work done. It was also a makeshift bedroom for Kate’s mom, who stays with them to help take care of their two-year old son, who is currently being homeschooled. The arrangement started to take a toll on the family, especially when the little boy started running around, bumping into furniture in the cluttered area. Kate wanted to carve out spaces for a homeschooling area for their son, a home office for her and Ryan, and a more comfortable sleeping nook for her mom.

Interior designer Kat Villanueva Lopez, who has been working on Real Living’s makeovers since 2004, took note of all of Kate’s ideas, as well as the style they wanted to achieve—a Scandinavian look light wood and touches of black. Kat worked her magic by changing the layout first—she made specific areas for lounging/sleeping, and for homeschooling/working. Next, she brightened up the room with a fresh coat of paint and textured wallpaper from Handyman. And then for the furnishings, she added a custom-made sofa-bed, along with a console table and study chair from Design Armoire.

Kate and Ryan are excited to show their newly made-over living space to friends and relatives. Moreover, the couple is happy now that Daniel has ample space for homeschooling. “Lahat ‘yan, gusto ko,” Kate beams. “Perfect siya para sa family ko!
