A Farmhouse-Inspired Makeover for a Drab Kitchen

Kahel Concepts and Interiors achieved a striking and functional layout where families can bond over good food

While we spend hours in our bedrooms or lounging in the living area, nothing beats quality time spent in the kitchen, especially when whipping up meals or sharing snacks with loved ones. Perhaps this is the reason why many of us love seeing kitchen makeovers—each transformation inspires us to make the heart of the home more ideal for family bonding.

In this rental property, Kahel Concepts and Interiors was tasked to make the space look and feel brand-new. “The client wanted to give the future tenants the liberty to make it as if it was their own. The only major space we designed was the kitchen,” shares interior designer Lia Tipon of Kahel. Keeping within the simple yet functional look of the entire home, the designer opted to work on a modern farmhouse-inspired makeover for the cooking area.

Measuring 13sqm, the lackluster kitchen needed an overhaul—from the overall look down to the storage solutions. “We incorporated a design that will satisfy both the lessor and the lessee. Modern farmhouse was the perfect option since we consider it as a middle ground between elaborate and simple," adds the designer.

Prior to the makeover, the kitchen had outdated tiles, a damaged ceiling, and insufficient lighting. The countertops, though spacious, even look unfinished.

The future tenants will surely look forward to cooking and enjoying meals in a kitchen as inviting as this. Kahel Concepts and Interiors repaired the damaged parts of the area and spruced it up with quality materials.

The old kitchen didn't have enough storage nooks where cooking essentials can be kept. Since storage is of utmost important in the cooking area, the designer made sure this was addressed.

“Since we decided to bring in the modern farmhouse appeal, slab doors were used instead of panel doors for the upper and lower cabinets to achieve a cleaner look,” explains Lia. “We selected white upper cabinets against dark cool gray lower cabinets for contrast. Brown tones were also added to add warmth to the space,” she adds.

The old kitchen only has a light bulb so to improve the lighting—which is important in a kitchen—the designer installed enough lights, with droplights defining the breakfast peninsula.

“Our favorite part of the kitchen is the breakfast peninsula because it adds an ample amount of prep space while also serving as a convenient alternative to a dining table for quick bites when one’s in a hurry,” the designer shares.

The herringbone-patterned backsplash adds texture to the space while complementing the concrete-looking laminated countertops. “All the colors and finishes were mindfully chosen to make this relatively small kitchen appear larger. Natural lighting also plays a huge part in making the space bright and airy,” Lia says.

Beside the refrigerator is an extra counter that can function as extra prep area. The storage nooks underneath can be used to store dinnerware and other cooking essentials. Lia also incorporated an overhead open shelving space where everyday kitchen and dining wares can be kept. There’s also enough room for small potted plants and décor pieces.
