Help! I Need A Makeunder!

We’ve all been there before: furniture pieces and appliances are complete, and we’ve put all our curtains and décor out. But then, you take a step back and think: It looks a little bit overdone? Now don’t be tempted to go out and buy even more furniture pieces; you probably just need a “makeunder!”

Decorator and former Real Living creative director Gwyn Guanzon worked a “makeunder” on Dr. Elaine Salazar’s townhouse living room, which she shares with her doctor-husband and daughter. Gwyn simply edited out furniture, clutter, and excessive color, changed soft furnishings to a lighter fabric and palette, and added an area rug to anchor the space. Because sometimes, in decorating homes, less is really more. Here’s how he did it.

Lighten the palette.

“The primary takeoff for this ‘makeunder’ is the color,” says Gwyn. “I made [the fabrics] neutral with a tinge of pale blue to contrast with the walls.”

By taking away the heavy brown drapes and replacing them with sheer white curtains, and swapping the green sofa upholstery with beige slipcovers, the room now looks more airy, spacious, and resort-like.

Put things away.

“Another problem was the furniture vis-à-vis the space,” says Gwyn. “Sobrang malaki ang mga pieces, kailangan tanggalin ang iba.

The bulky retro coffee table was moved to an upstairs room, and a lighter-looking table replaced it. Meanwhile, a sheepskin throw, stuffed toys, and kiddie pillows were removed. “Those belong in the playroom talaga,” adds Elaine.

Change the layout.

Simply changing the layout and angle of furniture pieces—an affordable makeover trick—was crucial here. The largest piece (the sofa) was placed against the widest wall in the room (the window wall). The oversized armchairs were placed on opposite sides of the sofa at an angle to create a conversational setup. The streamlined living room now looks more spacious.
