When was the last time that you changed the look and feel of your bedroom? Many of us have had the same color palette and furniture pieces for as long as we can remember! However, when we enter college or start working, we may want to start changing our private sanctuaries.

In the case of account executive Liel Gardon, she chose the pretty-in-pink color scheme for her bedroom when she was still in grade school. Now that she is working, she understandably would like to have a more age-appropriate space that could make her feel calm and relaxed.

To help her achieve just that, interior designer Vivian Gacad chose a soothing brown-and-blue combination, improved the bedroom layout, and replaced the furniture pieces and furnishings. Here are her tips to help you make the most of your own personal space:

For a more soothing feel, Vivian replaced the harsh fluorescent light with a pretty drop light from Handyman.

Vivian stripped off the faded and peeling pink wallpaper. She also removed the old-fashioned trimmings on the cabinets. The walls and cabinets have been painted in neutral beige.

She also used laminated wood to create an accent wall behind the bed. It is now the focal point in the bedroom.

If you want to change your own bedroom, you can let go of unnecessary furniture and move the remaining things around.

For example, in this space, Vivian removed the bulky TV stand and replaced it with something slim and compact. She also removed the old padded headboard and moved the bed to the center of the area.

The homeowner used to have a dresser on one side and a study table on another side. However, too many things made the bedroom seem cramped and crowded.

In order to make it more spacious, Vivian simply chose one multifunctional desk that the homeowner can use in different ways.
