7 Mini Makeovers You Can Work On

Let these subtle improvements work their magic in your space

When it comes to decorating the home, many of us are scared to take a leap of faith and try something new. Since it takes a bit of trial and error and experimenting on the side, you may want to get started on a few minor improvements. These changes may look simple to some, but it can give your home an aesthetic boost that can wow your guests. To help you get started, here are seven ideas worth considering:

1. Display posters that add character.

Do you love collecting vintage prints, quirky posters, or even a few that showcase your favorite band? Put them up for everyone to see and admire. In this bedroom, interior designer Mara Manalo opted for posters with a touch of quirk like a Palmistry guide.

As an alternative, you can have a world map on your wall so you can mark the countries you've visited. This can also fuel your wanderlust!

RL Tip: Hunting for posters you can display? Schedule a visit to Space Encounters. Visit their website and follow them on Instagram for updates.

2. Spruce up your kitchen with patterns.

Working with a compact kitchen? Give those mosaic tiles and pretty backsplashes a break by painting the walls behind your cabinet instead. A black-and-white diagonal pattern can capture the attention of guests away from the limited space. You can accomplish this pattern with the aid of painter's tape (available at hardware stores), your chosen paint, and a paint brush in a size you prefer.

3. Create a headboard using washi tape.

A calming bedroom completed with neutral colors can instantly become a welcome escape after a tough work day. Keep it from being too basic by adding simple yet sophisticated details. To liven up the wall above the bed, interior designer Carlo Mecate opted for gold washi tape. From afar, it looks like a fitting crown that the owner would love to have.

RL Tip: Find cute and charming washi tapes when you visit Common Room in Katipunan and Power Plant Mall, Makati or The Craft Central in Greenbelt 5, Makati City.

4. Liven up the ceiling with ribbons.

Some homeowners often neglect areas that guests don't often look at—like the ceiling. Turn things around by giving it an extra special touch—similar to what architect Angelo Siochi did in this bedroom. You would think that it has a recessed ceiling, but these are painted ribbons that define the sleeping area. Feel free to play around with your chosen colors—just make sure it complements your overall palette.

5. Go bold with the details.

To complete the minimalist take they have envisioned for this unit, Pai Edles and Misty Floro of Morfosis Design chose to work with paper core tubes. These tubes were installed on the walls—surrounding the living and dining areas. You can also work with paper core tubes—inquire at any printing press to get some—if you want a break from wallpaper and wall decals.

6. Play with patterns in the bedroom.

Similar to what you can do in the kitchen—painter's tape, a pattern in mind, and your creativity can take you places when it comes to sprucing up the bedroom. To achieve this look, interior designer Kristine Neri-Magturo worked with an Art Deco-inspired pattern and chose dark blue walls to set the mood.

7. Bring in a beautiful area rug.

Give your living area an elegant boost by investing in a quality rug that resembles marble flooring—similar to what Chino Carlos and Miah Gomez of Carlos + Gomez Interior Design did.
