Just like many people during the onset of the pandemic, married couple Mia and Ron Rivera wanted a refuge from the virus for their family. Having a 400sqm property in the mountains of Tanay, Rizal, they named it the Sky Cabin.

“Tinawag naming Sky Cabin itong property namin kasi located siya sa bundok,” Ron tells the OG team. “’Yon kasing level nitong property is parang ka-level niya yung sky. ‘Saka itong property namin located kasi ‘to sa isa sa pinakamalamig na area ng Tanay.”

Ron says the pandemic took its toll on his mental health, which is why they originally developed the property for their own family’s use.

“Malaki kasi matutulong nito sa sarili natin e, kasi ‘pag nandito ka parang mare-relax ka, talagang wala kang ibang iisipin kundi magpahinga,” he shares.

Welcome to the Sky Cabin

Today, the Riveras are officially opening the Sky Cabin to the public. It’s an off-the-grid location that sits in the heart of nature.

A main cabin made of bamboo sits on the property, with a fire pit outside for bonfires during chilly evenings. There’s also enough space to pitch a tent for interested campers, with solar lights to illuminate the area. Outdoor table and chairs made of rubber, meanwhile, act as a comfy chill spot for savoring the mountain view.

A detached outdoor kitchen made of bamboo comes equipped with a portable stove, barbecue grill, and samgyupsal grill for cooking. A simple toilet and bath is available, with a tabo for scooping water.

“Para authentic talaga na probinsya feels,” Mia notes. “‘Yon yung vibe na mafi-feel niyo ‘pag nandito kayo.”

Experience the Sea of Clouds

Stepping into the main cabin, one is greeted with a mini balcony with a stunning view of the forest, as well as the Sierra Madre mountains and its famous morning sea of clouds.

The room, which measures 15 square meters, features sliding glass doors which also provide access to the same vista from inside. A rack acts as a clever organizer for organizing clothes and bags given the small space.

Plants, along with rattan tables and a rattan mirror lend an organic feel, complementing the walls’ limewash paint. Guests can relax on a double-size bed which is good for two adults and a child. There’s also a pull-out mattress for an additional adult.

Visitors can enjoy the off-the-grid experience as the cabin’s lights and electric fan is solar-powered. Solar plugs are also available so they can charge their devices.

A worthy investment

“Ang total construction cost ko dito, simula sa paghahakot ng gamit, sa transportation, tapos yung pagpapalagay ng solar para magkaro’n na kami ng kuryente, overall, ang nagastos namin dito is around P380,000,” Ron says.

“Yung una kong nakita ko ‘to after ng construction, sobrang na-relieve ako,” he adds. “Alam mo yung after lahat ng mga hirap at pagod, pag-akyat, pagbaba ng bundok, parang lahat ‘yon nawala. Kasi talagang ‘pag nandito kami talagang nare-relax talaga kami.”
