RL Tips: Home Away from Home

Avoid getting homesick when you check into hotels with these handy hints

Going out of town over the long break? Sometimes, hotels can make you homesick. Have a more pleasant trip by surrounding yourself with familiar and beautiful things.

Cozy up.

If you have room in your luggage, smuggle in a neck pillow for added comfort. Bring a throw or blanket along to cozy up in while snuggling in bed. Throw a scarf over a too-bright lamp (make sure it doesn’t touch the bulb) to set the mood

Bring along your memories.

Do you miss your loved ones? Take them along with you in travel photo frames that you can stash in your handcarried luggage. A plus: use them to decorate your night table.

Ready, set, unpack.

One of the biggest mistakes of travelers is to just pull out their clothes from their bags as the days go on. Unpack your stuff, hang clothes in the closet (so you don’t have to iron them), and deposit your valuables in the safe.

Bring your own slippers.

If white hotel slippers are not your cup of tea, bring your comfy (and pretty) slippers from home. This way, you won’t look funny if you decide to schlep around the lobby in the middle of the night.

Smells like home.

Nothing is more comforting than the familiar smell of your own home, so replicate it by bringing your favorite home scents, like a tiny candle in a travel tin, or a small room spray (make it less than 100ml).
