RL Spotlight: Functional Pieces and Decorative Accessories

Form, Function, Furniture, or Art? Only you can decide.

In 2012, Avellana Art Gallery featured an exhibit entitled "Gamitan" -- which made guests question the age-old design argument of choosing form over function. Gallery owner Albert Avellana invited furniture, interior, accessory, and fashion designers to turn the tables and contest our common notions of functional furniture, functional art, or art that is just plain art. See the pieces and decide.

Sakay Na

Crafted with such preciseness, Eric Paras’s “Sakay Na” is a tongue-in-cheek work of furniture/art that delivers the irony—a extremely hefty piece of furniture with non-functioning wheels—with nonchalance.

You Don't, Dear

Venerated Filipino fashion designer Jojie Lloren’s wearable piece is a breathtaking, sinuous creation featuring the humble zipper. The oft-neglected—though all-important—clothing detail ducks out of the seams to shine in its possibly most high-style role to date. Another witty flourish—seamstress’s scissors plunged straight into the heart.

Designer Ricky David, who has whipped up some stunning lamps through the years, literally shakes up his favorite accessory through an upside down light fixture with the lampshade as base.

Mad Max

Bacolod-based furniture designer and architect Bernie Sason, whose works are sensuously crafted furniture pieces made of wood, comes up with a surprisingly aggressive chair that challenges people to think twice before sitting on it.

Architect Dan Lichauco also dabbles in VJ-ing and is a habitué at parties and other exclusive haunts, and this is reflected in his fun installation piece/club room. The entire room is pitch-black, and sparsely furnished save for his trademark chair and a coterie of lava lamps. There is a mirror behind this chair (unseen), and thumping house music loops in the background, making you feel like dancing by yourself.
