RL Entertaining: The Pot Luck Club

Get a group of friends together to celebrate nothing but the love of food!

Who says you need an excuse to cook up a feast? There’s no need to wait around for the next birthday to get together with your friends for a night of gustatory delights. Look for people with a similar passion for food, and form your own little foodie club!

The Club

Get together a group of people who love to cook—or even those who just love to eat. Agree to meet regularly (say, once a month), with a new dish for everyone to try. If you’ve got non-cooking foodies on board, have them bring their latest find from a little-known resto. Members of the club can take turns hosting the get-togethers. Everyone can bring ready-made meals, but half the fun comes from preparing the food all together!

The Food

It’s best to come up with a theme—perhaps determined by the host—per get-together so that the dishes will complement one another. You can go the international route and have themes based on food from another country: Italian Night, A Trip to Japan, A Taste of Thailand, and so on. Other possible themes:

  • Finger-food Night – Serve up hors d’oeuvres alongside a selection of wine.
  • My Favorite Things – Whip up your most favorite dish and share it with the rest of the club.
  • Dessert Buffet – Enjoy a night of decadence and overload on the sweet stuff.
  • Movie Night – Make something inspired by your favorite movie—and munch on it while watching it on DVD.
The Mood

Nix the idea of serving a sit-down dinner in your formal dining area (unless, of course, this was your pre-determined theme). The idea is to enjoy food without all the frou-frou place settings, so the club can eat right in the kitchen. Keep it casual—there’s no room for primness when you’re standing in front of a hot stove.

For Members Only

Make your foodie club extra special by supplying each member with a little box to stash all the recipes. At every meeting, members can bring copies of recipes on standardized cards to hand out to the other members of the club. Non-cooks can provide a directory of restaurants where they get their contributions.
