RL Entertaining: A Casual Christmas Picnic

Throw a relaxed but classy Yuletide party for your friends in your own backyard

December is a month filled with reunions and get-togethers. Does the list of engagements include a dinner with your childhood or college barkada?  If yours is a little group of four or five mommies, it would be interesting to hold a festive afternoon party instead—with the kids! It’ll be a perfect time to catch up with your inaanaks and establish friendship among the little ones.

Here are a few tips to make the gathering even more memorable:

  • Find out the ages of the kids expected to join the party to help you decide on the food to serve and games to prepare.
  • Choose an outdoor venue, preferably a playground, to give kids the space to run around and play games. It would be better if the playground has a covered gazebo or a function room nearby in case of rain.
  • Remind your guests to dress up in pretty yet comfortable frocks as they are expected to join in the fun and let loose.

Bottle it Up

After wrapping Christmas presents, you’ll probably have a lot of those short strips of glittery ribbons. Use these scraps with tiny Christmas tree décor to decorate glass bottles.

Cookie Container

Use queso de bola and biscuit tins as a way to serve cookies! You can also use them to make it easier for you to take home the leftovers.

Popcorn Cones

Got excess printed Christmas cartons? Roll them into cones and fill with caramel and chocolate popcorn. Voila! No-sweat giveaway for kids!

Juicy Place Cards

This edible place card is just perfect for a casual classy setting, and appealing enough for kids. Just cut out leaf-shaped pieces of paper, write your guest’s names, and then attach them to the apple stems. Remember to choose apples with the nicest shapes and colors!

DIY Christmas Tree

An affordable, season-appropriate centerpiece: personalize a generic potted pine tree with loose pine tree leaves, bows, small plastic fruits and nuts, and other holiday baubles. Play with textures and colors to make it truly yours.

DIY Tabletop Accents

There’s no need to buy new Christmas tablecloth! Dress an existing beige or cream tablecloth with strips of green ribbon.
