Must-Visit: The Drawing Room

Art takes center stage in this sizeable gallery where you can pause and savor each masterpiece

If you want a dose of local art, head to The Drawing Room. Located at The Alley at Karrivin, a new lifestyle hub in Makati, The Drawing Room features works of Filipino artists—both established and up and coming—as well as Asian artists. “I choose artists whom I like and whose works I like. Most of the time, they are referred by artists we work with,” says Jun Villalon, owner of The Drawing Room.

Before, The Drawing Room was located along Metropolitan Avenue in Makati City, but it was a smaller space, and Jun felt it limited what the artists can do, so they transferred to a bigger and taller space at The Alley. It was designed by architect Anton Gonzalez Mendoza, Jun’s friend. Here, natural light abounds in an expansive, all-white space. Each artwork is given enough space to shine for the gallery goers to appreciate it better.

The Drawing Room features a wide range of artists. “We hold shows once a month, so we do around eleven shows a year,” says Jun. Some of the artists they have worked with are Manuel Ocampo, the late Roderico Daroy, Gaston Damag, Lirio Salvador, and young artists Vermont Coronel, Kat Medina, and Troy Ignacio.

“We represent a wide range of artists. We like artists who speak about where they come from, where they are, the artist that comments on current state of affairs. But we’ve also worked with very good abstract artists. I just want to see some honesty and integrity in the work,” says Jun.

So what’s next for The Drawing Room? “We constantly try to improve and present the best shows that we can,” says Jun. “[This month], we’re flying to Paris to do Asia Now art fair.” When you visit The Drawing Room, make sure to come back, because there will always be something new that you can look forward to.

The Drawing Room is located at The Alley at Karrivin, 2316 Pasong Tamo Ext., Makati City. Check out The Alley’s Facebook page and follow them on Instagram
