Meet A Bamboo Architect And A Man Who Makes Chairs Out of Trash
There is a pioneering interior designer, too! Listen and learn from these innovative local and international designers at this building fair in the South
There is an old saying that you have to “listen to learn,” and this rings true for all learning and thought processes. This September, designers, students, and enthusiasts can learn to further their skills and professions by attending the First International Interior Design Convention in the South at Philbex Cebu, 2017.
In the series of talks over three days—September 14 to 16, 2017—local designers as well as international designer like Jane Ho of Malaysia and Francis Surjaseputra of Indonesia share their insights on the theme “Designing Inclusivity.” Get to know some of the speakers here:
Interior design stalwart: Leo Almeria
Tacloban-born IDr Leo Almeria is a multi-awarded interior, product, and furniture designer, as well as one of the pioneering stylists and visual merchandisers in the country. He also teaches interior design at the University of Santo Tomas.
Leo’s signature flair and disciplined use of space and accessories can be seen in his commercial and residential projects, as well as his floral designs. His talk will focus on “Design Archiving And Documentation.”
Bamboo architect: Rosario Encarnacion Tan
Architect Rosario “Ning” Encarnacion Tan has studied bamboo and traditional building techniques for decades—in fact, she herself lives in a bamboo house. Her research focuses on various building techniques using bamboo, and how the material influences the living patterns and habits of the end user. Her talk will be about “Interior Space Expressions With Bamboo.”
Master recycler: Winchester Lemen
Davao-based engineer Lemen is the president of Envirotech, a company that recycles plastic waste into different products. They work with various barangays and LGUs to gather the waste, create material recovery facilities, and recycle the waste into school desks, chairs, benches, and even building components. Lemen will discuss “Chairs Reimagined” at Philbex.
Creative collaborator: Oliver “Birdie” Salva
Design manager Birdie Salva is part of Curiosity Design Research, a Quezon City-based design strategy firm that offers consultancy to businesses, NGOs, and government units to create programs, systems, and techniques by drawing on local insight. Curious enough? Listen to Salva’s talk, which will be about “Involving The Community In the Creative Process."
Brave innovator: Eggarat Wongcharit
This Thai furniture and interior designer was educated in Milan and New York, CEO of Craft Factor, and is a regular organizer of the Thai exhibit at Milan’s Salon Internaziole de Mobile. He challenges the typical view of Asian design by infusing technology into his creations, coming up with futuristic spaces and furniture. Eggarat will talk about “Glocalizing Thailand Brand Creation.”
