Spanish design superstar Jaime Hayon never takes himself too seriously, and it shows in his work. In spite of winning numerous international awards, being named “Breakthrough Creator” by Wallpaper magazine and Maison et Objet Designer of the Year, working for almost every major company from Magis and Mooi to Baccarat and Lladro, he still finds time to create playful, whimsical, but mindfully designed objects and a whole lot of art (he doodles and sketches everywhere).

Real Living caught up with Hayon prior to his lecture and live art session for industry professionals at a recent Manila event sponsored by the Republic of Fritz Hansen, the 145-year-old Danish company that produces the iconic chairs of the likes of Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, and Piero Lissoni. As expected, the designer was his usual happy, inspired, and lighthearted self—and here, he reveals his favorite things.

What color are you drawn to?

“I love blue, dark blue, spicy blue. Like a real blue. It’s the blue you see in India. I also love indigo, which is the opposite. Blue is a very interesting color—beautiful to make shadows with, a very special color.”

What scent evokes a memory for you?

“I love melograno. Pomegranate. That’s a smell that I refer to certain memories a lot.”

What’s your favorite book?

“The Alchemist by Paul Coelho. It’s a super-simple book, it’s basic, but I like it because it tells you exactly what to look for in life. People are always saying the [grass] is greener on the other side, always going too far to find inspiration, they are always saying it’s no good where they live, they are never contented. That book tells you that you can go everywhere and it’s just right there, you just got to open your eyes. That book shows exactly what humanity should aim for. Instead of trying to look elsewhere, you only have to open your eyes.”

What’s your favorite gadget?

“It’s a knife—because I love to chop things with a knife and cook nice food (laughs). A good cooking knife, cuts perfectly. And I want a good knife and cut something really small, and make it really precise.”

What’s your favorite object on your night table?

“I got a lamp that produces an atmosphere that I really love, and I think that’s really important, and I always have a book because I like to read something at the end of the day. So I try to put the computer off. Something I always like is that I always have a painting in my room that I always like to at. And I change it once in a while. Different paintings—not mine, but I try to always have something that reminds me that you can look at things and see something new every day.”

“I like awareness a lot, I think to be reminded of awareness that you live in now, for me, is very important. I never even thought I was even going to be in a magazine in my life. I never thought I was going to design for Fritz Hansen, and everybody wants to design for Fritz Hansen! And here I am. You don’t have to plan it, just got to do that with your heart and open your eyes.”

You can find Jaime Hayon’s pieces at Fritz Hansen, Studio Dimensione, One Parkade, 28th St. cor. 7th Ave., Bonifacio Global City, tel. (02) 736-3728.
