Heritage House Tour: Villa Milagros

This grand dame of a house is ready to host your most splendid fetes

“My grandparents were inspired by their travels to Europe in the 1950s. They wanted to build a house that had a European aesthetic,” says Andrea Liamzon, Villa Milagros’ Manager, on the elegant white mansion nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Her grandparents—Isidoro Buenviaje Liamzon and Ma. Milagros Manahan Liamzon—then signed on the services of Architect Rey Eustaquio to help realize their vision. It took five years—from 1965 to 1969—to build the grand house and was unveiled, just in time, at the couple’s 35th wedding anniversary.

Located in Rodriguez, Rizal, the opulent mid-century classical revival mansion—reminiscent of the ones in New Manila—occupies 700sqm of the one hectare lot. It boasts of five bedrooms, a graceful driveway, a grand spiral staircase, a lookout tower, front and back terraces, and precast concrete moldings characteristic of houses of that kind. Also on the property are extensive gardens featuring the trees and plants which the matriarch Milagros herself planted.

This family vacation home enjoyed some piecemeal improvements over the decades. But just last year, it underwent a major updating when the Liamzons decided to breathe new life to the once exquisite villa. The family had to replumb and rewire the house, redesign the drainage system as well as retile the terraces due to soil erosion and changes in elevation. The first rooms in the house to be updated were the master bedroom and the library.

5 Facts about Villa Milagros:
  1. It’s named after Ma. Milagros Manahan Liamzon, wife of Isidoro Buenviaje Liamzon and the Liamzon Matriarch.
  2. The house was originally furnished with some furniture imported from Europe and with pieces from House of Puyat, a sought-after furniture maker of the time.
  3. The Steinway piano on the second floor was a gift to the eighth child Julie, the most musically inclined of all the eleven children.
  4. The porcelain chandeliers and wall lamps on the second floor were shipped from Spain.
  5. The peacock door handle was especially designed for the house and was carved in Isabella.

The Liamzon gallery wall features various family photographs. Isidoro Buenviaje Liamzon and Ma. Milagros Manahan Liamzon had 11 children—three boys, and eight girls—and over 34 grandchildren.

The stove from the 1960s is still in the kitchen.

These wooden peacock handles were especially designed for the house and was carved in the northern province of Isabela.

The master bedroom is on the first floor and right off the vestibule. The exquisite wooden headboard is original to the house.

Here’s one of the porcelain wall sconces on the second floor, the ones shipped from Spain.

Villa Milagros boasts of a lookout tower which offers a splendid view of the property and the town.

This spiral staircase leads to the mirador or the lookout tower.

The house's main hallway showcases the medallion, a recent addition to the space.

In the dining room, the chandelier, wood panels, and window grills are all original to the house.
