In the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang in Laos—best known for its traditional and colonial architecture—is a complex of heritage houses turned hotel. 3 Nagas Luang Prabang is a 15-room boutique luxury hotel under the French luxury hotel brand Sofitel’s MGallery Collection, where each heritage hotel is captivating, charming, and celebrates its own local character.

One of the houses that make up 3 Nagas Luang Prabang is the Lamache House. Built in 1898, it is a French colonial manor that has seven rooms. The Lamache House features high ceilings and wide windows that allow good ventilation, as well as shaded balconies that serve as buffer spaces—providing a good view of the road.

The house was erected for the unofficial deliberations of the Royal Court and later on became the official Royal Ice Cream Supplier, after Mr. Lamache’s grandchildren started a very successful ice cream business. In fact, three bottles of essences—used to flavor the ice cream—were found during the restoration of the property.

With much respect for the original structure, traditional Lao method of construction was followed during the restoration. They also used exquisite materials like May Pow, a kind of wood traditionally used in boats—for the woodwork, floors, and furniture. A sculptural wooden staircase was added at the center of the house for comfort and security of the guests.
