5 Ways To An Eco-Friendly Lifestyle
Going green should start at home!
Contrary to popular belief, having a sustainable home isn't that difficult or expensive. While solar panels and energy-efficient appliances are big pluses, there are a ton of other ways to reduce waste and decrease your carbon footprint—after all, every tiny act counts when it comes to saving the environment. Learn a few more green living tricks from our list below:
1. Green your kitchen.
This area generates most of the waste in the home. Instead of using paper towels, opt for dish towels and cloth napkins. Stop buying disposable containers and use washable glass or porcelain food storage. Lastly, consider assigning every family member a refillable, washable drink bottle instead.
2. Reexamine the disposables.
Look for the small things you can replace. For example, get a razor with refillable blades rather than single use plastic shavers. You can also try buying food in bulk to ditch the excess packaging.
3. Put a stop to "vampire" energy.
Even when turned off, things like hair dryers, mobile phone chargers, and televisions suck energy. So unplug your chargers and other energy drainers when not in use. Lights, fans, and AC units should also be turned off when you leave a room.
4. Go paperless at home.
When printing a document, use both sides of the paper. Whenever possible, send materials electronically to reduce your printing needs. Switch to refillable pencils and pens.
5. Save gas.
Gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60mph. For better fuel economy, accelerate and decelerate gradually and turn off your engine if stopping for more than 11 seconds. If you're one who doesn't mind traffic, try walking or using public transportation whenever possible.
