5 Things to Love About the Summit Books Booth at MIBF 2015

Tons of books, magazines, great deals—and a cozy nook that bookworms would love

September signals the beginning of different things in our country—start of the Christmas season, many big sales and events, early holiday shopping, and if you're a bookworm, we're sure that you always look forward to the Manila International Book Fair!

Now on it's 36th year, the five-day event brings together publishers and book lovers in one venue to celebrate books and reading. What makes it more special? Each booth is unique and inviting! Aside from big signs announcing discounts, the spaces have special touches that will entice visitors to stop and see what's in store for them in each.

Summit Books' booth was designed by interior designers Kimi Manuel and Athena Maramag. They translated the ideas of the Summit Books team into a visual concept and space that people can step into and get excited with all the books.

If you don't have weekend plans yet, make sure you drop by the fair and do check out the Summit Books booth! It also placed as a finalist for Best Booth at the fair, too!

Here are some of the things that we loved in the space:

The cozy appeal

Kimi shared that they wanted to incorporate the Summit Media branding in the overall design of the booth by working with a red hue.

"We used this on the plaid fabric on the walls and balanced it with different wood tones to bring warmth and texture into the space," shares Kimi.

The DIY wall accents

To liven up one side of the booth, printouts of book covers were displayed using clipboards. If you also want to spruce up a plain wall at home, you can do the same using photos and prints!

The recycled wooden pallets

Visitors surely won't miss the creative use of wooden pallets. It served as a wall on one side and as a table where the books are placed.

"The recycled wooden pallets bring a "crafts" feel to the space and softens the otherwise metal racks-filled booth. It is the combination of these that create an effective image-making appropriate for Summit Books' roster of publications and that which is appealing to their target market," explains Kimi.

The lovely cashier counter

How can you make a check-out counter pretty and charming? Kimi and Athena worked with different pieces to complete this corner. We can't help but notice the use of a black background, warm lighting, and well-curated decor reminiscent of a "book bar."

"The key pieces in the booth are the cashier counters—which are reminiscent of a library's card catalogue (not seen in the photo—and definitely another reason why you need to drop by!), the industrial lamps from Match Contract Furniture are influences of cafes, and the plaid fabric wall," shares the designer.

The must-reads—of course!

Missed a couple of issues of Real Living and your other favorite Summit Media titles? Back issues are available for only P50!

And if you're determined to complete your set of Real Living books, they are available in the booth as well. Get copies of My First Home Book and the Real Home Ideas series, too!

Summit Books will also have book signing events on September 19 (Saturday) and September 20 (Sunday). For the complete schedule, visit their Facebook page.

Loved the industrial feel of the Summit Books booth? Kimi shares the following tips to help you create a similar vibe at home:

  • The beauty with the industrial-inspired aesthetic is that it doesn't have to look polished, which makes it achievable for homeowners. Be creative and work with personalized materials to achieve this look. Consider the industrial style for a study nook, a kitchen bar, and maybe even a man cave.
  • Work with unconventional items that will create a strong character. Do reuse furniture and smaller items such as lamps and accessories. Bring attention to the integrity of material such as unpainted wood and exposed metal. Layer this with bold patterns such as plaid and chevron for a dynamic look.

The 36th Manila International Book will run until September 20 from 10am to 8pm at the SMX Convention Center. Entrance fee is P20 for adults and P15 for students and senior citizens.
