Located in one of the quieter streets of Quezon City, this café has a woody, industrial vibe with local flair. Visitors can easily find themselves settling in to relax in the serene atmosphere that is conducive for reading, catching up on work, or have unhurried conversations with friends.
2. The unique and exceptional details
Apart from the well-appointed Mahogany wood main counter displaying the beans, grounds, and specials for the day, a traditional-style coffee roasting machine occupies a sizeable spot on the ground floor, giving customers a first-hand appreciation of the bean to cup journey of the beverage they are about to have.
3. The selected pieces of decor and furniture
The shelving units display a myriad of coffee preparation gear in happy hues and shapes, such as the splat-shaped Cafelat tamping mats (catches fallen coffee grounds and protects countertops), and cute “Tubbis” or knockboxes (pails to store spent espresso gounds).
The café has long tables made of Lauan (Philippine Mahogany) suitable for groups, and smaller ones that can be used by a solo customer. The small tables can be moved next to each other to connect effortlessly with their unique, rhombus-like slanted sides.

The dark but cool gray walls of the ground and second floors evoke masculinity, and this is offset by thin plywood wall mounts in animal patterns, and chalk illustrations drawn freely.

As for the name, Department of Coffee couldn’t be more perfect for the owner’s vision. “We want to be the connoisseurs of coffee, and share our passion with our clients. We want to help coffee drinkers understand what they’re drinking,” shares café owner Myles Hontiveros. “I want to make customers feel different when they come to the store. We have fewer drinks, we don’t use too much flavoring, our coffee is more straightforward. For non-coffee drinkers, they can still enjoy the ambience and we can pour latté art in their hot chocolate.”
