10 Things You Need to Have in Your Emergency Kit

Be ready for anything with these must-haves

Last Thursday, the MMDA and the other agencies successfully held the Manila Shake Drill to help promote the culture of preparedness if and when the "big one" hits. The drill also reminded us that we need to be prepared during other natural disasters.

Aside from knowing what to do and where to go, we also need to prepare an emergency kit to help us get through the first few hours. Let the list below guide you:

Battery-operated radio

This is important so you can stay updated on weather updates and storm warnings.


Blow a whistle when trapped indoors or under debris during an emergency. 

Garbage bags

Use garbage bags to keep your surroundings clean, especially when staying in evacuation centers. Plus, you can use them to protect your possessions from the rain.

Long-nosed pliers

Keep a pair to help you turn off your main utilities during a storm or before an evacuation.

First aid kit

Stock up on basic medicines like antipyretic tablets, decongestants, vitamins, and other essentials needed by members of your family.

Stock up on food, preferably in ready-to-open cans, that can last up to three days. You can also bring crackers and candies.

Bottled Water

In case of water shortage, have at least a gallon of water ready for each family member. 


Have several AA, AAA, and D batteries on hand for your battery-operated gadgets.

Clean Towels

Keep a few towels on hand especially when you have to transfer to an evacuation center. 

LED Flashlight

Prepare a flashligh to avoid navigating in the dark in case of  power outages.
