American Country Style for a Pinoy Home

Discover how former Real Living creative director Gwyn Guanzon created a Little House on the Prairie-inspired space

Since this subdivision has an American suburban theme, all of the houses have candy-colored exteriors and white picket fences. Inspired by these elements, former Real Living creative director and decorator Gwyn Guanzon chose an American-country feel for the interiors of the Andrade family home.

Gwyn explains that the style is more American than country because of the use of leather and stripes. He adds that instead of choosing bleached wood, he opted for dark wood. The living area, dining area, and den are filled with custom-made wooden pieces, chocolate brown upholstery, and leather details. These items are complemented by floral patterns on wallpaper, pillows, and decor.

Since this subdivision is patterned after an "ideal" American neighborhood in the 1950s, the space is filled with rows of nearly-identical, shingled houses.

House Facade

Homeowner Erwin looks on as his sons Aaron and Jace ride their bikes outside their house. The home is surrounded with a perfect white picket fence. However, Gwyn shares that homeowners should consider using metal made to look like wood.

The family can relax on the white loveseat in the lanai. The space is completed with budget-friendly finds from Dapitan Arcade.

Living Area

The living area is furnished with an L-shaped sectional sofa and white and yellow ceramic stools. White accessories are placed on the coffee table.

Wall Decor

One of the living area walls has been adorned with more affordable pieces from Dapitan Arcade.

Dining Area

In the middle of the dining area is a custom-made dining table with mismatched seats. The upholstered banquettes are paired with host chairs (that almost look like director chairs!) that have leather stitching.

Dining Area

The dining area is completed with brass and leather lighting fixtures and an accent wall covered in floral wallpaper from Shell Canvas.

Gwyn explains that the den is the most used room in the house. He says that this is where the family watches movies and spends time together. The space is spruced up with framed floral prints that complement the floral wallpaper.

Since Gwyn had leftover wallpaper from the dining area wall, he used it in the study area. To highlight the wallpaper, the space only has white shelves and tables and black stools.

Master Bedroom

For the master bedroom, Gwyn chose tromp l’oeil wallpaper that looks like a tufted headboard. This can be a cheaper and more interesting alternative to an actual headboard.

Boys' Bedroom

Brothers and best friends Aaron and Jace have this bedroom for themselves. Jace made the patterned kidney pillows on the bed for school. In between the beds is a side table topped with a lamp and a globe.
