A Three-Storey, Modern-Classic Townhouse

A couple fills their home with elegant, bespoke pieces that won't go out of style

After moving house four times, this couple finally found the perfect home—a 280sqm townhouse that they would soon tailor to their own needs and lifestyle. "Apart from the construction, planning, and implementation headaches, you also have to think about whether the design will be comfortable and would fit your lifestyle and needs," says the man of the house. And this space shouldn't just suit them, as they live with their brood of pets: their dog Kylie and macaw birds Tyrone and Zach.

The couple sought the help of Chako Hirayama of Design HQ to achieve the look that they wanted. With an American modern-classic look in mind, Chako and the couple furnished the house with custom-made pieces from Home Matters. "There is nothing more convenient than customized furniture that fits the size of our house as well as our needs," says the owner. And indeed, the couple got the outcome that they wanted.

Living Area

A mix of upholstered and wooden pieces makes for a casual but still elegant look. The coffee table is made of salvaged wood, while the sofa is made of water-resistant fabric.

Dining Area

The solid wood top of the dining table adds texture and warmth to the dining area. The couple loves to have friends over, and the low-maintenance table is a suitable piece. The dining chairs are also upholstered in water-resistant fabric, while the nailhead trims add a hint of elegance.

Glass cabinet doors enable the couple to see what's stored in each. These also keep the kitchen from being visually heavy. Meanwhile, the mosaic backsplash keeps the kitchen from looking plain and boring.

Entertainment Area

Simple accessories that spruce up the floating shelves create small but elegant vignettes in the entertainment area. The white mouldings also add subtle details.

Photo Gallery

This wall is filled with stories, thanks to framed travel photos that the lady of the house painstakingly collated—as not everything can be printed in black and white. "Pinaglaanan ko ito ng time para when people ask about them, makaka-share kami," she says.

Master Bedroom

Unlike the neutral-dominated living and dining areas, pops of colors make the bedroom lively. The sizable bedroom made the lady of the house fall in love with it. Framed artwork perched on the ledge above the bed add more color to the space.

Master Bedroom

The sitting area at the foot the bed adds to the hotel-like ambiance in the master bedroom. Colorful throw pillows make it cozy, while the wooden coffee table adds warmth.

The lady of the house says that her favorite detail in this room, which the couple assigned as a future nursery, is the wallpaper. The illustration of hot air balloons adds a touch of whimsy while keeping the bedroom from looking too kiddie.

Powder Room

The opera-themed wallpaper in the powder room makes the space look glamorous.
