The Valera family home’s plain, whitewashed box structure from the outside belies the hidden cozy style inside. With a real estate family business background and the husband’s expertise as an engineer and contractor, it was fairly easy for the Valeras to build a custom home from scratch. The couple opted to forego the services of an architect and took matters into their own hands instead.
For the interiors, they enlisted the help of interior designer friend Mila Abaya. With her help, the Valeras were able to establish a Modern Tropical style. Clean lines and the absence of frilly detail call to mind the minimalist architectural style of their house. Meanwhile, the dominant use of wood textures and indoor plants create a warm and cozy vibe.

At the main entrance, a soothing stone water feature and a koi pond welcome the Valeras home to their relaxing abode. According to Hellen, her children love spending time in their home, so much so that they don’t stay at their halfway house in Ortigas anymore.
Dressed in neutral tones and shades, the living room provides ample seating with a sectional sofa and a large armchair. Custom window treatments feature a delicate pattern coordinated with the throw pillows. Woven textures and real indoor plants help evoke the tropical vibe, while bright red accent colors add a dose of energy.
The dining room is a formal and symmetrical composition with a massive dining table dominating the space, surrounding high-back chairs and a large mirror to make the space look bigger. The red accent color is applied on the ceiling.
Located by the kitchen, the bar area is appointed with chrome bar seats with modern appeal.
A cooking enthusiast, Hellen dreamt of a large and spacious kitchen that can cater to her cooking and entertaining passion. The kitchen still employs warm wood finishes and a neutral color scheme, thus evoking the Modern Tropical style.
A table for two by the stairs is equipped with bright red chairs, keeping in theme with the accent color repeated throughout the house.
Hellen's husband and son have a shared interest in electronics. This prompted them to include an entertainment center with surround sound in their home. Plush leather seats making watching a movie a comfortable experience.
Situated by the pool, the gazebo is an enclosed and air-conditioned space. Large windows let in lots of natural light and rattan furniture impart a tropical vibe, providing openness to the outdoors without the comforts of indoor living.
