Work and Play

Q. We have a small sala that I’m turning into an entertainment and work area. Can you give me budget-friendly ideas to personalize it? —Koren A. Fontelo, Dumaguete City

A. Start with some décor and accessories. Paint an accent wall in your favorite color. To personalize your space, furnish it with sentimental pieces like pillows, your favorite lounge chair, a study desk, a lamp that you burned the midnight oil with. —Pauline La’O, interior designer

Feeling Woody

Q. My personal design style is sleek-meets-elegant but I find hard woods like molave enchanting. Any suggestions on how to fit in wood into a sleek and elegant space? —Fermin Antonio Yabut via Facebook

A. Wood in itself is a sleek and classic material. When you show its natural grain and tone, it easily fits in well in any space. Pick a wooden piece that is simple in design and make sure it blends in with the surrounding items and space, rather than a piece that stands out. —Vito Selma, furniture and product designer
