Michi’s Little Helpers

By Michi Calica, Fashion Designer

“It is a satire of Santa's Little Helpers. Every Christmas season is also the peak of my bridal and made-to-order, special occasion dressing business. The life of a designer and seamstress on this holiday is frenetic, yet fruitful. It is the season we prepare for and look forward to.”

Ostrich feathers, Michi’s signature hand cut, hand appliquéd petals, Swarovski crystals, high heeled shoe ornament, pincushion, ribbon, twigs, silver spray paint

What Michi did: “[For the base], I used twigs from my flower shop, then sprayed it with silver. I arranged [the wreath] the way I would arrange a flower arrangement. I created a collage of the components used on a couture gown. Balance, texture, witticism were key in this piece. You see a lot of elements in this wreath reflect the components of a bridal gown designer, those embellishments found on a couture gown—the ostrich feathers, my signature hand cut and hand appliquéd petals, [and] Swarovski crystals. I added humorous touches like high heels and even a seamstress' pincushion. I finished the wreath with a lovely tulle accent.”

Birth of Hope

By Ricky David, Interior Designer

“My inspiration for this wreath was to show a symbol of hope and positivism in a time where we hear, see and experience many negative influences and events in media and in going about our daily lives.”

Raffia, five ostrich eggs, white feathers, glitter leaves,

What Ricky did: “I started by wrapping the wreath in raffia to create a nest where five ostrich eggs nestle in protective comfort and warmth. All materials were wired to the wreath’s frame in an asymmetrical arrangement. The soft quality of raffia symbolizes rest and ease from burdens. The white feathers symbolize nurturing and protection as when a mother bird watches over her brood of eggs. The rust and gold glitter leaves symbolize all that is past… and it is in learning from the lessons of the past that we make ourselves [a better person].”

Christmas Cheer

By Archie C. Chua, Bespoke Holiday Décor Service/Rentals

“My [idea] is to [apply] the traditional approach by using my vintage glass ornaments collection. The colors are the traditional red and gold. [It] has a retro feel.”

30-in. mixed artificial pine wreath, glass Christmas ornaments, French wired ribbon, Santa figure

What Archie did: “I wired [the ornaments]. I placed them randomly [on the wreath]. For a twist, a Santa fairy welcomes the holiday guests. And for my ribbon accent, I chose a French wired ribbon because it spells a bit of luxury.”

Bleu Noel

By Archie C. Chua, Bespoke Holiday Décor Service/Rentals

“It has a contemporary feel. Using the same elements as the traditional color, I used citron, silver, and blue. May pagka-retro din siya because of the traditional shape. [It’s] traditional with a twist. I could imagine this for a grand foyer [in] a modern apartment.”

30-in. mixed artificial pine, glass Christmas ornaments, pine cones, silver paint

What Archie did: “The position of my embellishments [make] a [crescent formation]. [I added] peacock feathers to soften the [look]. I [also] used platinum silver holly leaf spray, and silver painted the pine cones.”

If you’re pressed for time, simply opt for a store-bought wreath. This one sports the traditional red-and-green combo, but instead of being filled with predictable Christmas ornaments, it is laced with red berries that give a homey and cheerful vibe.
