Reader Question: How Can I Maximize a Small One-Wall Kitchen?

Q: I want to organize my kitchen. I'm a student who shares a studio-type unit with a roommate. We have a number of appliances: refrigerator, range with oven, microwave oven, heating pot, bread toaster and a mixer. And there are a lot of other stuff cluttering our one-wall kitchen. Can you give me a few tips in organizing this space? Is it safe to put our microwave oven on top of our refrigerator? We also need a place to dry our dishes right after washing. Thank you. — Regina
A: If you can’t install open shelves in your kitchen, you can buy those stainless steel kitchen organizers at SM Home or at Make Room (Glorietta Makati and Powerplant Mall). These will immediately make your kitchen look less cluttered, and are available in different sizes and configurations. In order to find the right size, make sure you measure the height and width of the space you’re going to allot for the organizers.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to put your microwave above your refrigerator. It’s recommended that you keep your microwave on an even countertop so it’s easier to put in or take out items. Always put your microwave above eye level to prevent any unfortunate accidents.
