Jumpstart Your Day: 4 Ways to Incorporate Big Pieces in a Small Space

Be guided by proportion when decorating your home

Many homeowners think that adding big pieces in a small space can only make the home look cramped. How can you move freely if there are big pieces blocking the way? Can your guests still feel comfortable when they visit?

Contrary to popular belief, big pieces can actually work in a small home. To be able to make this work, you need to consider proportion and think big! Here are helpful tips that may just come in handy:

Start with a big artwork

A massive painting can liven up the room and the size can serve as a focal point in an under-decorated room.

Strike a balance

Offset your big pieces with something long and narrow. For example, if you have big armchairs, pair it with a slim-lined coffee table or get one that's transparent. You can also place a pair of big armchairs in a narrow corridor to make the space seem grander than it seems.

Work with a large plant

Large indoor plants such as a potted balete, a giant fern, or a traveler's palm positioned behind a sofa, in a corner, or against the wall can make a difference.

Be tongue-in-cheek

Treat the placement of your pieces nonchalantly, and you can get away with anything. Consider it your art installation—the oversized items will end up being conversational pieces for guests.
