The Best Indoor Plants to Grow in Your Bedroom

For anyone thinking about upgrading their favorite room with a little greenery.

If there's anything we've learned during quarantine, it's that being around plants can do so much good for your overall well-being. In fact, one study found that it can reduce stress. Another study says that it can improve your concentration and creativity. And if that's not enough, plants can also boost your mood because being around nature just has a calming effect.

Plantitas and plantitos have started growing their indoor gardens and plant collections at home, but they're probably in common living areas, huh? Or, if you're really trying to turn your house into a garden, you might even have them in your bathrooms. But do you also have some in your bedroom? If you've turned your room into your office during the pandemic, there's a good chance you spend most of your time in there because of work. It's probably a good idea to also have a plant or two in the corners or even on your desk to keep you connected to nature.

Here are a few recommendations of indoor plants for your bedroom.

The Best Indoor Plants For Your Bedroom

Indoor Plant For Bedroom: Snake Plant

A snake plant is so, so easy to take care of. This slow-growing plant doesn't require too much attention. The sansevieria has upright leaves with striking lines, very much like snakeskin. If you're thinking about putting it on your desk, and there isn't a lot of space, make sure you buy one from the smaller selection (yes, they come in different sizes). Snake plants prefer indirect sunlight and before each watering, check that the soil is dry to avoid overdoing it.

Indoor Plant For Bedroom: ZZ Plant

Another plant that won't stress you out is the ZZ plant or zamioculcas zamiifolia. In case you didn't know, a ZZ plant is actually a succulent, which means it's perfect for your room for two reasons: It can thrive in low-light environments and it doesn't need a lot of water. If you don't have a big window in your room, a ZZ plant can even survive with just fluorescent bulbs as its main light source. As with most succulents, the biggest killer of a ZZ plant is over watering, which leads to root rot. To avoid this, check to see that the plant's pot has drainage holes at the bottom.

Indoor Plant For Bedroom: Aloe Vera

Perhaps the second most popular succulent among indoor plants is the aloe vera. Aloe plants can come in different varieties, some growing up to 30 feet, so it's important that you check that you're buying one that's suited for the space it's going to take up in your bedroom. The aloe vera needs bright light to survive, but that's about it. You'll only need to water it once every two weeks, so if you're a forgetful person, we'd suggest going with this low-maintenance option.

Indoor Plant For Bedroom: Philodendron

Philodendrons shouldn't be placed under direct sunlight; these beautiful plants prefer medium or indirect light, but can also survive in low-light conditions—they just won't grow as fast or produce as many leaves, but hey, they won't die if your room is more shaded. Another plus is that if you don't want to deal with soil, philodendron can be kept in containers with water. These plants are also easy to read: If it looks a bit wilted, it means it's not getting enough water. Once you water a philodendron, it'll spring back up.
