How Do You Choose the Best Paint Color for Your Space?

Before you do a DIY paint job, make sure you practice applying it first

Painting a room on your own is no easy feat. Once you've decided to go DIY, you must remember to conduct a test application first before painting the entire area. This will allow you to practice your strokes as well as observe your chosen hue.

“Test your chosen paint color first on a small portion of your wall, and observe how it looks during the day, at night, and in different lighting conditions," shares Interior Design Professor Tess Quevedo.

  • If you’re painting a whole room, test the paint on different walls. The color may look different near a window or a dark corner. Observe if the shade changes with natural light or under a fluorescent lamp.
  • If you're not too keen on doing this on your wall, you may also test the effect of light by painting on large pieces of white paper. Move it around to see the effect of light.
  • Test three colors at a time or different shades of the same hue. This will make it easier for you to decide on the shade that matches your interiors.
  • Wait for the paint to dry and observe it during day and night. You should familiarize yourself with the different types of paint so you can determine which type is suitable for your walls. According to interior designer Wilmer Lopez, enamel paint works best on wooden surfaces while latex paint is best for concrete walls and cement. Click here to learn more about the different types of paint
  • If you are not in a hurry, observe the test wall for a few days. Some colors take time to evolve; some may not deliver the vibe that you'd like to achieve over time.
