How-To: Paint Over Carpeting

Breathe new life into old area rugs with this step-by-step guide

Everyone knows that carpets or area rugs can make or break a space. With countless colors, patterns, and designs available in the market, you're almost always certain that you'll find a piece that can make your home look twice as beautiful.

However, no matter how elegant it might be, new area rugs can be very expensive. No need to worry as you can still cop the look by transforming a plain piece into a gorgeous item with upholstery paint and a few rolls of painter's tape. Check out the step-by-step guide below:

What you need:

  • An old carpet or area rug
  • Upholstery paint
  • 5 to 6 rolls of painter's tape
  • 4 drop cloths
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Rags

  • Lay out the carpet on the concrete or grass to see how much you need to cover. If you're forced to work on this project indoors, make sure to cover your tiles and hardwood floors with drop cloths to avoid stains.
  • Start plotting your design on the rug. If you're planning to work on an intricate pattern, you can sketch your design onto the rug using a pencil or a marker using light strokes.
  • Use the painter's tape to cover areas that you don't want to paint yet. Make sure to press it down firmly to keep the colors from seeping underneath the tape.
  • From here, you can start painting. Don't forget to spray flat and straight. Make sure to work layer by layer instead of drenching the rug. If you accidentally form puddles of paint on the tape, quickly dab it off using a rag.
  • Once you're done painting, let it dry completely. After an hour or so, test for wetness, then remove the tape.

RL Tip: Feel free to make random tweaks to the design using the same techniques with the paint and tape!
