DIY: Framed Stencil Holiday Art

Display something different this season with an easy-to-make holiday décor

It’s that time of the year when we start with the holiday festivities by cleaning the house and displaying Christmas décor. If you’re tired of Christmas trees and lanterns, why not try an easy DIY décor? This graphic stencil art is easy and cheap—you can make one using materials you might already have in stock. Here’s how:

  • Any picture of a holiday flower (here, we used poinsettia)
  • Square photo frame with border or matting
  • Plain white cartolina
  • Red felt paper
  • Tracing paper
  • Dark lead pencil
  • Eraser
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or cutter
  • White glue

1. Disassemble the frame and measure the area inside the border or matting. Divide the area into four quadrants by marking it with a pencil.

2. Cut a sheet of tracing paper the size of the area inside the matting. Then, put the tracing paper over the part of the flower photo that you wish to copy. Trace the outline of the flower.

3. Flip over the tracing paper and place it on the reverse side (the white side) of the red felt paper. Trace the outline drawn on the tracing paper on the white side of the felt paper.

4. Do Step 3 using the other side of the tracing paper to create a mirror image.

5. Cut out the shapes you just made, then flip over the felt paper to reveal the red side. Position the shapes on the quadrant you made on Step 1, making sure that each shape mirrors the other. Erase the pencil marks and glue the shape in place.

6. You can also add leaves to enhance your artwork, following Steps 2 to 5.

7. When the glue has dried, put your artwork in and assemble the frame.
