DIY: Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Give your reflection a happy hit of color and pattern

Combine two trends—hot colors and funky florals—in this romantic, painted mirror (we chose a gold frame for a bit of luxe). Treat it as artwork and hang it in a prominent spot, like above a console table in the foyer, or nestle it in a private corner, like on top of your dresser table. Just don’t look at it too long!

How long this will take: One afternoon

  • Medium-sized mirror
  • Quick-drying acrylic paint
  • Fine paintbrush
  • Wax pencil
  • Old newspapers

How to do it:
  1. Lay out old newspapers to protect your workspace.
  2. With a dry cloth, clean the mirror and frame of any dust or smudges.
  3. Choose a floral pattern from a fabric swatch or magazine. Have the pattern photocopied to enlarge or reduce it to your desired size.
  4. Copy the pattern on the mirror with a wax pencil (you can practice on plain paper first). Make it trail along the edges of the frame towards the sides of the mirror. Make sure you keep the center clear.
  5. Paint the pattern on with a fine brush. Apply the lightest shade first, darkest shade last. Wait for each shade to dry before the next application.
  6. When paint is completely dry, wipe away any stray wax pencil marks.

Tip: Guess what’s a good replacement for acrylic paint? Ordinary nail polish! You don’t need to mix colors—just choose the shade you like. Work quickly with a superfine brush (the polish dries really fast), and have acetone on a cotton bud ready to clean up any mistakes on the glass.
